NR500 was an innovative racing motorcycle developed by Honda HRC in 1978 to compete in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
The NR stood for New Racing.

The rules at the time allowed up to four combustion chambers so honda designed a 32 valve V8 with four pairs of linked combustion chambers. This then evolved into an innovative engine with four oval-shaped cylinders. The oval cylinders allowed room for 32 valves and eight spark plugs, the same as that of an eight-cylinder engine while staying within the four cylinder rules limit. Another innovation used on the NR500 was its monocoque body which wrapped around the engine like a cocoon and helped reduce weight. In an effort to reduce wind resistance, the bike also used 16-inch wheels instead of the mainstream 18-inch versions.

Unfortunately, it seemed Honda tried to accomplish too much at one time and the experiment failed

For the 1982 season, Honda debuted their first two stroke race bike, the three-cylinder Honda NS500...

and in 1983, Honda won their first 500 cc Grand Prix World Championship with Freddie Spencer.
At 21, Fast Freddie Spencer had become the youngest World Grand Prix Champion in history.

The year was 1985, and young Grand Prix racing phenom Freddie Spencer was determined to do what no racer had done before: compete in both 250cc and 500cc classes during the same season. Honda was eager to back the ambitious venture, despite the fact they actually didn't have a 250cc bike in the stable. In three months, Satoru Horiike managed to design and build a two-cylinder 250cc bike, as well as a 500cc ride with a brand new V4 engine. Spencer performed brilliantly, sometimes jumping off the 500cc podium and running toward the 250cc grid, only to find that the other racers had already taken off. By seasons end, Spencer achieved 15 pole positions, set 9 new track records and won 14 races, taking both the 250cc and 500cc championship titles on these two bikes—an unprecedented achievement that will probably never be matched.
