motoGP : 1st Round analysis

MotoGP Round 1 2008 got off to a most unexpected start even before the red lights went out, with two Tech-3 Yamahas on the front row. This was quickly followed by Dani Pedrosa charging through to the lead from the middle of the third row. A launch off the line far faster than anyone else, this was so far out of the envelope of performance Honda and Pedrosa had set at tests and free practice at Qatar, no-one could quite believe it. By the end of the race, reasons for these odd events would be come clear.

Over the next few laps the Spaniard was reeled back in by the chasing pack, Rossi at its head and Stoner lurking at the rear. Toseland, lacking straight line speed, slowly falls down the order despite some bumping and boring. Rossi takes the lead lap 5 and holds it for three laps, during which the only change in the top five is Lorenzo taking 2nd from Pedrosa. Hayden meanwhile has fallen from 8th back to 10th on the 07 Honda.

Lap 8 saw a sudden change in the flow of the race. Stoner suddenly found pace and moved from 4th to 1st in a single lap. Then he was gone, pulling out a string of 1Œ55 laps from lap 8 - 20 which nobody else could follow. Only Lorenzo could get close to matching him over five or six laps.

Some notable rookie performances from Dovizioso and Toseland saw them finish 4th and 6th respectively. Toselandfs bike never had the race pace to live with the factory machines, and Dovizioso did a fine job in his first MotoGP race to bring it home behind Pedrosa.

Three significant factors arose during the race that are likely to prove very important for the coming season, and are down to the increased influence of electronics and fuel consumption management.

Toseland qualification versus race performance
Toselandfs admirable qualifying performance was down to being able to alter the tune of the bike to provide similar power to the pneumatic-sprung bike for the short sprint. The conventional bike is too thirsty to last the race distance with these settings, so Toselandfs slow drop to 6th can be explained by his motorcyclefs lack of power in race trim.

Pedrosafs lightning fast start
Dani appears to have hit the launch control and switched to a high-power, high-consumption engine mapping for the first few laps, before allowing the electronics to manage his fuel consumption by reducing peak power to get him to the finish line. This resulted in Dani having to be pushed along pit lane after running out of fuel on the cool-down lap.

Stonerfs slow start and lengthy domination
Stonerfs bike looked very average for the first seven laps. Bucking and kicking about the track, just about holding its own along the home straight, it looked very much like Honda and Yamaha had not just closed the power gap, but taken a step beyond Ducati. Japanese hearts must have sank when on lap 8, Stoner engaged a different settings to blow the rest of the field into the weeds. Only in the last couple of laps did he relent, having saved enough fuel in the early stages to keep up the pressure through to lap 20.

Overall, a masterful display by Ducati, still able to beat the Japanese at what was, for so long, their own game. Also a reminder of just how influential the electronics on the bikes have now become.
